Manfred Petri

Petri studied Humanities at York University and Industrial Design at Humber College in Toronto. Upon graduation, he apprenticed with Uredat, Industrial Design in Germany. From 1982-1984 he served on Humber’s Advisory Board.

Petri joined Geiger International in 1980. For the next ten years, as Geiger’s Design Director, he designed numerous popular products including Petri Furnishings (a modular wood casegoods line that set a reference point in the industry); Petri CaseSystem (a wood systems product); and the Triuna Collection (a highly praised product that the IBD awards judge commented ‘finishes the story of the executive desk’). Petri was instrumental to Geiger’s growth in the 80’s and many of his products continue to contribute to the company’s success to this day.

In addition to product design, Petri was a pioneer of ‘Desktop Publishing’ and his work featured in Aldus’ (now Adobe–a graphic software company) corporate brochure. A book on desktop publishing also showed his work.

Petri established his own practice in 1990. The firm is retained by various manufacturers for product, display, and showroom design. Petri’s designs have been recognized with numerous awards and praise. One reviewer recently wrote–’The product bears his casegood’s customary stylistic fingerprint: handsome proportions, subtle and precise details and compact scale’. Design recognition is only part of the story–almost all of Petri’s designs through the years are still in production today.
